Covid 19 impact on physical health, mental health and weight gain

This year, I have seen a significant increase in anxiety, depression and weight gain. People are losing jobs, struggling wth finances, losing insurances and that is impacting their overall health. We I talk about health , it is always physical and mental health as one can not get better without fixing other. Being a primary care physician, it is my duty to talk to my patients about this and I always encourage my patients to discuss these and if needed seek help either with counseling and medications. This is a difficult time but time always change and things get better sooner or later but we have to be strong and deal with this. 

The other issue I am seeing this year is an average of 10 pounds weight gain in most of the patients. Lot of people were and are still working from home and have easy access to all kind of food at home and their meals routines have changed significantly. Those people who used to go to gym regularly have less acitvies now as not everyone has exercise equipments at home. I encourage my patients that walking is the best and safest exercise these days, walk aorund your neighborhood or go to a park and walk for  30 minutes on average. You can walk, jog or run as tolerated depending on your overall physical health. Remember! any exercise you start , it should always be gradual and as tolerated by your body and you should always discuss this with your doctor.
